Preparation

Why do I have to drink this preparation?

The colon needs to be cleansed before it can be examined.  A preparation that is not optimal will not allow for a good exam and it may need to be repeated.  This is why it's important that you follow the instructions given to you

I lost my preparation instructions

Please see this link for a list of preparations.  Please look for the appropriate type of preparation
If you do not have the prescription, please call 684-1817.  We will call your pharmacy with another prescription

Can I change this preparation for another type?

Yes, you can change the type of preparation.  However, it will have to be done on a case-by-case basis and you will need to contact your doctor ahead of time.

When do I need to start the preparation?

Most people need to start the preparation the day before the procedure.
For some people, including persons who are usually constipated, will need to start two days in advance by ingesting only clear liquids for two days and taking milk of magnesia or other laxative (like Senokot 2 tablets once before bedtime) 2 days before the procedure.

What if I have nausea or vomit?

You may slow down the pace of dinking the preparation.  If you have a lot of vomiting, please call the GI physician on call and another type of preparation may be called to your pharmacy

Can I take my routine medications on the day of the procedure?

Yes, please take all your medications, except if you are a diabetic (please see the next paragraph)
You will need to stop all blood thinners and aspirin (and aspirin-related products, like Motrin, Advil, etc)  5 days before the procedure.  Please TALK TO YOUR PRIMARY CARE DOCTOR OR CARDIOLOGIST to make sure that this is safe.
We recommend that you do not take iron pill for 7 days before the procedure

What if I am diabetic?
